Calendar of Events with the Office of Environmental Education
There are so many activities that you can do with your family and friends on the weekends. The Office of Environmental Education has a calendar of events around North Carolina. Many of the programs and events are geared towards children and are located in Wake County. There are tons of free events and programs that you can participate in! I highly recommend attending these events and programs and also going on site visits to EE locations. If you attend an event, program, or site visit, you can earn extra credit each quarter.
Places to Go with the Office of Environmental Education
The Office of Environmental Education has compiled a list of places to go with your family. The list is in alphabetical order and also gives the location of the different centers. As I was completing my Environmental Education Certification, I went to the Fort Macon State Park near the coast, the NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores, the Piedmont Environmental Center, and other various locations. I highly recommend going to the sites that the Office of Environmental Education has posted on their website because the places are interactive and informative. If you go to any of these sites, you can earn extra credit each quarter.
North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences
This museum is located in downtown Raleigh and is a free museum. The new wing on the museum is amazing. I went two days in a row because there was not enough time to participate in the interactive labs, and go through the exhibits. This is a great place to go on a rainy weekend! If you go to the museum, you can earn extra credit each quarter.
The Herp Project
Herpetology is the study of amphibians and reptiles. During my time on the science team at UNCG, I was fortunate enough to have Dr. Catherine Matthews and Dr. Melony Allen as two of my team leaders, who have contributed time, knowledge and energy into the Herp Project. I participated in various herpetology events, including going to Dr. Matthews' vernal pool in her backyard and looking for spotted salamanders for two days! The picture to the left are two spotted salamanders that my team collected at Camp Chestnut Ridge. The Herp Project website has a calendar of events of herpetology events that I urge you to attend. If you attend an event, you can earn extra credit each quarter.
